Does an "average straight person" in the US know who Ellen is and how big are the chances that they would buy her biography and read it?
I'm trying to figure out whether a straight (?) couple from Austria I met this summer is actually having some kind of marriage of convenience (a large majority of our mutual friends do not believe that they are actually husband and wife). One day, they asked me what I'm reading and they told me that they are reading Ellen's biography. They asked me whether I knew who Ellen is. I replied something like "yes, a US actress and talk show host" . I didn't mention her sexual orientation. They seemed to be very content with my answer.
