Homophobes and Gay Pride 2011 in Split

When it comes to men, I find it interesting that the most ardent homophobes whom I have encountered in the Balkans spend significantly more time socializing with their male friends than with their wifes or girlfriends.

I've been to a few straight bars and have noticed that most inebriated young men get very touchy-feely with their male buddies (they hug, carress and squeeze each other) but they do not dare to approach straight girls (especially not if they are not alone but in a group of female friends).

Seeing that the most ardent homophobes usually are the deepest in the closet, ten thousand inhabitants of Split/Croatia came out during the first Pride that took place on June, 11th 2011.

Why did so many "anti-gay demonstrators" feel threatened by someone else's sexual orientation? Why were they so full of hatred, intolerance and readiness to resort to violence?

it's the inside of the head that counts

Many shallow and superficial people (both men and women) seem to be so obsessed with my haircut or with my hair or to be more precise the lack thereof. I often have the impression that some of them spend more time thinking about my hair than I do. What makes them think that the fact that my style is different gives them the right to ask me to justify it? I stopped counting how many times I have been asked since when I have been wearing my hair this short and why. My answer to the latter question is always the same: "because I like it this way, duh" - even though they accept this reply, it is quite obvious that they were expecting to hear something else. Most of them would never admit that they assume that women with "a man's haircut" want to be men because they are too ashamed of their primitive reasoning. A couple of (bi-curious/gay) women have asked me to look at them and hold still so that they could imagine what I would like with long hair. A few men have asked me to do them a favor and to let my hair grow (at least a little bit). I always refuse. I would never change something about myself because somebody doesn't like it.

A few weeks ago I heard a drunk man shouting behind me "if she's a girl, why does she have short hair like a man?". Right, men have naturally short hair, they don't need to shorten it. How could I forget that? :D
